Ethiopian Satellite Preschool Design Competition

While creating a place for children, it is important to have an atmosphere that is exciting and offers different potential. They both have fun and learn where different spatial potentials arise. They may not want to limit these environments, but on the other hand, a safe environment should be provided. Therefore, with this project, it is aimed to create an environment where children can be free and at the same time feel in a warm and safe environment.


In the mass formation, it was aimed to create a closed courtyard in the center of the classrooms. With the separation of the open courtyard from the closed courtyard, the excitement was asked to spread throughout the project. The unwanted perception of space has been avoided. With simple mass movements, new spaces were created, in addition to those needed. One of these spaces serves as an open classroom, while the other spaces allow children and employees to spend time together. Corral and orchard are located at the boundary of the project, seperated from the general mass. Thus, it has been made possible to grow. It is possible for the main closed masses to grow and allow different sites. The general plan setup has been designed in accordance with flexibility.


Apart from the school function, different age groups are expected to use the space at different times. The closed courtyard can be transformed into an area where local people can do their activities on certain days. In this way, the building can be open to the service of not only children but all villagers.


While the main carrier material throughout the project is concrete; Soil bricks are the main visual material of the project with their alignment algorithm and usage dominance. In the covering system, although trapezoidal plates are used as a hard material for closed masses, matting is used at points where there is movement.


Throughout the project, concepts such as flexibility, easy manufacturability, sustainability and a perception of space that allow children are aimed.
